Converted Closet Door Growth Chart
This was an usual request. The customer preserved this utility closet door from his home. What makes this story a little more special is that they had moved away from the home and ended up moving back to the same house some time later. The closet door had been removed but not thrown away. So my customer decided to preserve this door becaus it had his kids’ growth chart on it.
The goal, to remove a single layer of wood from this door to preserve. It was 1/8-inch plywood, but the door was really well put together. It took hours of painstaking effort to remove this panel from the internal door frame/bracing. It took several days to pry and cut staples I didn’t know were there. But it eventually came apart. I sanded all around the dates to clean up the wood and prep it for refinish. A walnut frame was also built to encase and support this door panel. While working on it I suggested that we lay pictures of the kids in next to their dates of measures. The final step to preserve this special gift was to fill with a couple thin layers of epoxy. He wanted to keep a bit of something from the original door so the original door knob was incorporated into the project.
